KATY Round-Table Discussion on the AI Act Implementation

KATY partner UNIVIE hosted a roundtable discussion as part of the final consortium meeting in Lisbon, Portugal

From 12 to 13 March 2025, KATY held it's 3rd annual progress meeting in Lisbon, Portugal, at the Information Technology Department of the University of Lisbon. With the aim to update the work conducted and implemented, the consortium partners on-site and remotely focussed on the final steps to reaching the project's objectives, before project end in June 2025.

Legal partner UNIVIE took the opportunity to conduct a roundtable talk titled "AI Act Implementation in the Health Sector Challenges and Opportunities" on the legal, ethical, and societal aspects of the AI technologies in the medical sector, and the impact, reception and regulatory aspects of the recently enacted EU AI Act (2024), the world's first AI-specific legislation governing the design, development and use of AI technologies. Apart from clinical and technical experts within the KATY consortium, the roundtable was attended by a distinguished panel of external experts from law, human rights, AI, and healthcare, who are involved in similar medical research projects, such as MELISSA, COMFORT, TEF-Health, dAIbetes, Better4U, and PHASE IV AI.

All participants took the opportunity to discuss and share insights on the AI Act from a compliance point of view, specifically to EU-funded projects in the health cluster and their outcomes for the medical sector, such as data protection, AI governance, the use of synthetic data, transparent AI, XAI, and AI accountability.

For the KATY consortium it was the last opportunity to gather in person after a 4-years journey for developing a personalised medicine system empowered by AI, which predicts the response of kidney cancer to targeted therapies.
